Hiking

Your Unforgettable Hiking Vacation

Hiking in New Zealand is both a challenging and highly rewarding part of our trips. Our Rimu trip includes an awesome 3-day guided hiking tour of the Nelson Lakes National Park and our Manuka includes what many believe to be the pinnacle of any New Zealand hiking vacation - the Milford track guided walk.

Both the Rimu and the Manuka trips include several incredible day hikes and as much scenic walking as you want to do. The Tui and Kauri, being shorter trips, include some of the best day hiking tours available in New Zealand.

Guided Wilderness Hiking

Our hiking tours take us deep into the wilderness. They are NOT easy, tourist walks and fortunately we're there to navigate, provide pep talks, cook, interpret the environment, and look after you.

The places we go are amongst the most spectacular on the planet - and the fact that you have to walk for a while to get there means they're usually uncrowded, if not deserted!

We are licensed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) to take hiking tours into New Zealand's national parks, and we meet their stringent safety standards. All of our guides are fully trained in outdoor management skills and wilderness first aid.

The hiking tours we undertake are in some of New Zealand's most beautiful national parks. Our Manuka trip includes the world-renowned Milford Track Guided Walk, and we can also set you up to do other well-known hikes such as the Routeburn and the Abel Tasman. These are great tracks - it's just that we know some better ones… If you would like some advice on the best New Zealand hiking tracks or logistical support for hiking in New Zealand, please give us a call. We're more than happy to help you pick out some suitable trips.

Hiking in New Zealand

The Department of Conservation in New Zealand does a great job of making the most of the country's natural splendor with thousands of well-marked hiking trails and well-maintained public huts. The Great Walks, as they're called, are some of the most famous "tramping tracks" in the country -- although not necessarily the best in our opinion as they tend to be more crowded.

We have compiled a short list of some of our favourite New Zealand hiking tracks below, simply click on the link for more information. Again if you have questions about any of the tracks please feel free to contact us for more information.

Abel Tasman Coastal Track
The Abel Tasman Coast Track is a 51 kilometre, easy to moderate walking track that passes through a picturesque landscape of coastal forests and golden sandy beaches. All streams are bridged and most people can walk it in 3 - 5 days with plenty of time to explore. Sea Kayaking around the coast is also a very popular New Zealand vacation option.

Heaphy Track
Crosses a range of landscapes in Kahurangi National Park, from the junction of the Brown and Aorere Rivers, over expansive tussock downs to the lush forests and roaring sea of the West Coast.

Kepler Track
A 67 kilometre, moderate hike that takes three to four days to complete. It traverses lake edges, beech forest, alpine mountain tops and a U-shaped glacial valley.

Lake Waikaremoana Track
Magnificent forested scenery and plenty of opportunity for swimming and fishing are features of this walk.

Milford Track
Described as "the finest walk in the world", the track extends for 54 kilometres from the northern end of Lake Te Anau, to Sandfly Point near Milford Sound. It is renowned for its glacially carved valleys, alpine flowers and waterfalls.

Rakiura Track
A 29 kilometre, 3 day tramping track suitable for anyone with moderate fitness. It can be walked year round.

Routeburn Track
The Routeburn Track is a 32 kilometre, two to three day, moderate hiking track which links Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks via the Harris Saddle (1,277 metres). Features of the track include waterfalls, forested valleys, rich birdlife, lakes and spectacular mountain scenery.

Queen Charlotte Track

Charlotte Track offers a spectacular 71-kilometre trip that can be done in 3-5 days cutting through the Marlborough Sounds, from the historic Ship Cove through to Anakiwa. Please note that the entire Queen Charlotte Track is open to Mountain Biking from March 1 to November 30 each year.

Hollyford Track

The Hollyford Track is a 56km, four day (one-way), moderate, tramping track from the Hollyford Road end to the old port of Martins Bay. Beginning among the sheer rock walls of the Darran Mountains, the track follows the Hollyford River/Whakatipu Ka Tuka on its journey to the sea. Features of the track are the two lakes Alabaster/ Waiwahuika and McKerrow / Whakatipu Waitai.
